Russia Fakes North Pole Flag Mission

It's been a busy time for the Russian propoganda machine, only last week they planted a flag under the North Pole with all the symbolism of the US Moon Landings, and today it was reported in SvD that the picture might actually be a fake, digitally manipulated from footage of the Titanic wreck!

If you're going to make a fake image, don't take the picture from a Hollywood film! This is just like the bollocks of the bad old days under Communism. I wonder what really happened. The Russian's had really built up the mission before the sub left port, so maybe, when it turned out they weren't actually going to be able to do what they had claimed, they decided to fake things rather than admitting defeat.

It would be quite funny if not for the fact that Russia is a sabre-rattling with the West again and clearly willing to go to whatever lengths necessarry to score political points with the rest of the world.

They wanted to place the flag in order to claim the right to oil and gasresources under the North Pole. But the Pole aad the ice mass has a treaty, no one shall expropiate it.

Unless... The North Pole is ice, and the global heating will melt the ice. And there will be no more iceed North Pole. And the Russians might find oil and gas.

The pictures that were from titanic were from Reuters, the picture you, and svd have is from AP and has not been put under question. Read the TT-text carefully, and you will see the inconsistencys. Or read my blog.

Good thing you don't live in Russia, you'd be an easy victim for their propaganda machine.

Amanda,

I read your very good critique of the SvD story, and perhaps Russia is the victim of Western propoganda in this case. I'm not anti-Russian, but I do love a good conspiracy theory!

Still dropping the flag in an area which is also claimed by Canada is provocative to say the least.

Dear All
Please, read this
http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,,2146373,00.html
If you speak Russian you can go and read this
http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=130065&tid=47512
and watch this
http://www.vesti.ru/video.html?vid=105418
This footage is dated 13.08.2007

Thus,
1. Russians were referring to the Cameron's movie from the begining of the expedition, discussing the track record of the submatines.
2. The footage was referred and commented properly in Russian. Reuters merely forgot to translate the comments, purely accidentally, of course...
3. As Reuters said "This footage was taken during the search for the Titanic and copyright is held by Russian State broadcaster RTR"
4. Nobody seems to remember reports about WMD in Iraq. You can not imagine how many such reports are still around.

Correction of a typo in my previous post:
This footage

is dated 13.07.2007 not 13.08.2007
Apologies.
