Machu Picchu Reopens for Tourists

I was happy to see that Machu Picchu is finally reopen for tourists after being closed for some months.

My wife and I travelled around Peru in 2002 and the although visiting Lake Titikaka and seeing wild Alpaca in the Atacama desert were great experience, the highlight of the trip was always going to be the 5 day hike to Machu Picchu, it was the only reason we were there.

Unfortunately we both got food poisoning and spent the few days before the start of the hike walking around Cuzco, trying to stay with running distance of a loo. In the end we did the whole hike eating nothing but popcorn (the only thing that would stay down or not fall out!). We made it though and the 5 hours we spent there were unforgettable and some how more satisfying because the extra struggle we went though on the journey.

It's a real shame the Peruvian government cannot find the funds to manage the site in a way that would really preserve it for future generations. It's an incredible place to walk around and imagine the lives of the Inca people (which is more than can be said for the town of Aguas Calientes which lies beneath the site which was a dump).
